How to Use a Question Bank for FMGE (Without Wasting Attempts)

Question banks are a skill, not a pile of PDFs

Doing 500 random MCQs with no review is entertainment. Doing 80 MCQs with a strict error process is preparation.

Choose the right mode

Tutor mode (learning)

Use when:

• The subject is new or weak
• You are rebuilding a topic
• Explanations teach a rule you will reuse

Test / timed mode (performance)

Use when:

• You already know the topic map
• You need stamina and pacing
• You are within 6–8 weeks of the exam

The 4-box error log

For every wrong or guessed item, tag it:

1. Knowledge gap — never learned
2. Concept confusion — two ideas mixed
3. Careless — misread stem
4. Strategy — changed a correct answer

Knowledge and confusion errors need restudy. Careless/strategy errors need slower stem reading drills.

A high-efficiency daily loop

1. Pick one subject or weak topic (subject guides)
2. Solve a focused set
3. Review explanations immediately in tutor mode
4. Write 3–5 flash rules from mistakes
5. Re-attempt similar items after 48–72 hours

Spaced repetition without fancy software

• Day 0: learn via tutor MCQs
• Day 2: redo only incorrect IDs / same topic
• Day 7: mixed set including that topic
• Day 21: appear in a full mock

When to move from sets to mocks

Move toward full mocks when:

• You have touched all 19 subjects at least once
• Mixed timed sets are stable above your comfort threshold
• Your error log is shrinking weekly, not growing

Then alternate: mock → deep review → targeted repair → mock.

Common question-bank mistakes

• Chasing quantity leaderboards instead of accuracy
• Reading explanations passively
• Avoiding hard subjects forever
• Never practicing with a timer
